CMHS Virtual Update 10-28-2020

Due to a rise in local Covid-19 cases, beginning on Monday, November 2nd, all of the Calais School Department students will move to remote learning and the Calais Elementary student will remain virtual. Calais Middle/High School, Alternative School, and Pre-K students will not be attending school in-person or virtual on Thursday, October 29 and Friday, October 30 in preparation for the move to remote learning.

On Monday, November 2 Calais Middle/High School students will begin attending  each day. All student will be expected to log into classes from home each day. Please see the following chart to show log on times for all CMHS students.

Time        Blue Days            Time        White
8 am Blue 1 class 8 am White 1 class
9 am Blue 2 class 9 am White 2 class
10 am Blue 3 class 10 am White 3 class
11 am Blue 4 class 11 am White 4 class

On the attached calendar is the Blue/White schedule for all students throughout the month of November.

Students will NOT need to log on for homeroom or study hall. Please help students manage their time efficiently from 12 pm – 2 pm for school related work. Students should take a lunch break and then use the remaining time to complete reinforcement activities from the day, ongoing projects, and/or homework. Work needs to be completed and submitted on time for each class. Student attendance will be taken for each class.

Teachers will be available from 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm to assist students who have school work questions. Please have them email their teacher directly for assistance.

If your student needs a reliable device to access virtual learning, please contact the school ASAP so we can get a device signed out on Thursday or Friday this week.

If you would like to receive a school breakfast and/or lunch for your student(s), please email Karyn Demmons at kdemmons@calaisschools.org.

With the switch from in-person to remote learning, students will have more time with their teachers receiving instruction and participating in whole class and/or small group discussions and/or activities.

With the current information, the Calais School Department plans to reopen to in-person learning on Monday, November 30, 2020.

Thank you,

Mary Anne Spearin

CSD Update

From the Office of the Superintendent of Schools

October 28, 2020

Following a meeting with Calais School Department Administration this morning, the following decision was made:

ALL CALAIS SCHOOLS WILL MOVE TO DISTANCE LEARNING BEGINNING THURSDAY OCTOBER 29, 2020 AND CONTINUE UNTIL MONDAY NOVEMBER 30, 2020.

(We will revisit this decision weekly and if it is deemed in the best interest of students to return to school at an earlier date students and parents will be notified)

  •   All students will receive detailed instruction about accessing distance learning from their Principal or CTE Director.
  •  Special Education students will receive direction from the Special Education Department, because their programming may vary.
  • This decision is made out of an abundance of caution, review of current Covid-19 data for Calais and surrounding areas, and consultation with Maine CDC.

Ron Jenkins

From Superintendent Ron Jenkins:

From the Desk of the Superintendent of Schools:

Because we have had two positive cases of Covid 19 at the Calais Elementary School and after consultation with the CDC, we have decided to offer only virtual classes at the Calais Elementary School through November 8, 2020 and returning to school on November 9, 2020.

We are monitoring the situation in our other schools and will keep you informed of any further developments.
